Former California deputy suspected of killing his 11-year-old son is fatally shot during police pursuit

On Tuesday, police in Elk Grove near Sacramento responded at about 8 a.m. to a mother’s call that she feared for her children’s safety after watching home‑security footage showing their father violently assault his 11‑year‑old son.

Investigators found the boy with multiple stab wounds; he later died in hospital while his 6‑year‑old sister was unharmed. The suspect fled the scene and was seen driving southbound on Interstate 5.

Authorities pursued him, and the chase ended in a collision near Lodi after the California Highway Patrol deployed a spike strip. The suspect was then shot by officers and also died in the hospital.

Marvin Morales, 40, was identified as the man who had been dismissed from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office in February 2024 when he was discovered using illegal drugs (sheriff’s sergeant Amar Gandhi confirmed this on camera).
At least two deputies – and one Elk Grove officer – were involved in the Tuesday shooting, but no law‑enforcement agents sustained injuries.

It remains unclear whether Morales fired on police before he was shot. A gun safe at his home was found empty, and the incident is currently under investigation by authorities.
