In a shocking case of medical negligence at Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital in Kerala, a guide wire was left inside a patient’s body during surgery. Kerala Health Minister Veena George has now stepped in, promising strict action against those responsible.
The incident came to light after Leader of the Opposition VD Satheeshan raised the issue in the Kerala Assembly. Minister George quickly responded by forming an expert committee to probe the medical negligence case. “We treat such lapses very seriously,” she said. “Once the report comes in, we’ll decide on next steps, including removing the guide wire. The patient will get free expert treatment, and we’ll take strong action against anyone at fault.”
But Satheeshan isn’t satisfied. He slammed the government for not holding anyone accountable yet. “They’ve just set up a committee— that’s it. The victim deserves compensation, and we need to fix responsibility right away,” he added. He also pointed out a big error: the minister’s reply accidentally revealed the complainant’s identity, which he called a serious breach. Satheeshan urged the Speaker to look into it.
This heartbreaking story started on March 22, 2024, when young Sumayya underwent thyroid surgery at the hospital. Soon after, she faced severe health problems. Tests at Sree Chitra Hospital uncovered the forgotten guide wire in her chest—a clear case of surgical error.
Police wasted no time and filed a case against the surgeon, Dr. Rajeev Kumar, under IPC Sections 336 and 338 for endangering life and causing grievous hurt through negligence.
Minister George doubled down, assuring the assembly that Kerala government will provide all necessary specialist care for free. She emphasized that disciplinary measures will follow the inquiry report, ensuring justice in this medical malpractice incident.
As Kerala continues to tackle healthcare challenges, this case highlights the urgent need for better safety in hospitals. Stay tuned for updates on the expert committee’s findings.
