Italian PM Meloni expresses solidarity with India over Red Fort blast

At the Johannesburg G20 Summit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni joined Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines and underscored the two countries’ shared determination to counter terrorism together.

“PM Meloni expressed solidarity with India on the terror incident in Delhi and reiterated Italy’s strong commitment to work together to combat the scourge of terrorism,” read a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The announcement also highlighted that the two leaders had launched the India‑Italy Joint Initiative to Counter Financing of Terrorism.
“The initiative aims to deepen bilateral cooperation on countering terrorism and collaboration in global and multilateral platforms, including the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the Global Counter‑terrorism Forum (GCTF),” the statement added.

Their encounter took place amid the G20 talks in Johannesburg, following a brief meeting at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, just before the summer.

During their conversation the leaders reflected on the progress of their strategic partnership, touching on trade, investment, defence, security, space, science, technology, education and people‑to‑people links, and expressed pride in the strides made under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025‑29.

They also celebrated the business forums that recently convened in New Delhi and Brescia, which drew strong industry participation, and reaffirmed their joint effort to expand business, technology, innovation and investment collaborations to strengthen both economies and secure supply chains.

Prime Minister Meloni welcomed the visit of an Italian space delegation to India, seeing it as a boost to cooperation in that arena for both government and private players.

She reiterated Italy’s firm backing for a mutually advantageous India‑EU Free Trade Agreement and for the success of the upcoming AI Impact Summit that India will host in 2026.

The meeting reaffirmed the long‑standing practice of high‑level exchanges between the two nations and underscored their eagerness to continue dialogue on global and multilateral stages, upholding shared values of democracy, the rule of law and sustainable development.
