Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is calling on India to step up its involvement in resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Speaking to on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Sybiha said he expects a more active role from India to help end the ongoing war.
The comments come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at the UN summit on Tuesday, joined by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Zelenskyy is pushing for global support amid the prolonged Ukraine-Russia tensions.
This follows a key phone call earlier this month between Zelenskyy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On August 11, the two leaders talked at length about strengthening India-Ukraine ties and the broader diplomatic challenges posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy shared details on X (formerly Twitter), posting that he appreciated Modi’s warm support for Ukraine’s people. “I had a long conversation with the Prime Minister of India @narendramodi,” he wrote. “We discussed in detail all important issues—both of our bilateral cooperation and the overall diplomatic situation.” He added they agreed to meet in person during the UN General Assembly in September and plan future visits.
Modi echoed India’s firm stance on a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi thanked Zelenskyy and reaffirmed India’s commitment to backing efforts for quick peace restoration. He pledged India’s full support in these endeavors.
India continues its balanced approach, urging dialogue in the Ukraine-Russia conflict while building stronger relations with both Kyiv and Moscow. As the UN General Assembly unfolds, eyes are on whether India will play a bigger part in peace talks.
