Artificial intelligence is now the biggest influence on how Indians work, a new study by Indeed shows. The report, released Thursday, says AI is the most important workplace priority in India, beating out pay and burnout.
A striking 71 % of Indian workers use AI tools to check ideas, solve problems or plan career moves. “AI has moved beyond a helper and become a trusted partner,” the study notes. The shift shows that Indian employees are increasingly relying on smart technology to boost productivity and make smarter decisions.
The survey also highlights a wave of behavioral changes at work. Three quarters of employees – 75 % – have adopted at least one new workplace habit. These include “skill nomadism” (switching between different skill sets), micro‑retirements, moonlighting, flexible schedules, and what the report calls “bare‑minimum Mondays” – lighter work days to recharge.
When it comes to learning and career planning, 68 % of entry‑to‑junior staff say they are actively trying new approaches. About four in ten employees blend work and life by moonlighting, taking short breaks, or working flexible hours. One out of five employers reports seeing a rise in employee attrition over 20 % in the past year, while 62 % of workers see brief job hopping or short office appearances as smart ways to adapt to change.
The trend toward frequent role and skill shifts helps employees stay employable and explore new career paths. “This flexibility enables people to quickly meet new job requirements and keep pace with technology,” the report adds.
Flexibility and autonomy are top drivers of these changes, according to 43 % of respondents, followed by stress and burnout (37 %) and concerns about job security (30 %). Indeed warns that firms must rethink talent strategies. Training, clear career paths, and retention plans should align with workers’ evolving expectations.
Valuvox, a SaaS provider, ran the survey for Indeed. It gathered 3,872 responses from 1,288 employers and 2,584 employees across 14 industries. The findings paint a picture of a workforce that is not only embracing AI but is also reshaping how it works and learns to thrive in a fast‑moving job market.
