World Athletics C’ships: Neeraj Chopra qualifies for men’s javelin final with first-attempt 84.85m

Neeraj Chopra, India’s javelin throw sensation and two-time Olympic medallist, has stormed into the final of the men’s javelin event at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The defending champion nailed the qualifying mark of 84.50m right on his first throw, sending the javelin soaring to 84.85m in Group A. It’s his fifth straight time doing this in just one attempt—talk about consistency!
Remember where Neeraj made history with Olympic gold? That’s the same Tokyo venue from 2020, and he’s back with a bang. After his effortless qualification, Germany’s Julian Weber joined him in the final. Weber started with 82.29m but powered up to 87.21m on his second try for direct entry.
Fellow Indian Sachin Yadav put up a solid fight in Group A, starting at 80.16m and ending with a best of 83.67m over three attempts. He’s still in the mix and hoping for a spot in the final through the rankings.
Now, eyes are on Thursday when the 27-year-old from Haryana defends his World title. He grabbed gold in Budapest 2023 with a massive 88.17m throw, becoming India’s first-ever athletics world champion. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem took silver then with 87.82m, but their rivalry heated up at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nadeem stole the gold with a whopping 92.97m, while Neeraj settled for silver at 89.45m.
This could be Neeraj’s third World Championships medal—he already has a silver from Eugene, USA, in 2022. The star’s on fire this season too, smashing a national record of 90.23m at the Diamond League in Doha, Qatar. That puts him third on the global bests list, trailing Julian Weber and Brazil’s Luiz da Silva.
Fans are buzzing—can Neeraj reclaim his throne and add another chapter to his javelin legend? Stay tuned for the final showdown!
