Shinsegae’s IT arm reports breach of employee data, no customer info exposed
Seoul, Dec. 27 – Shinsegae I&C, the information‑technology unit of the Shinsegae Group, announced that personal details of around 80,000 employees and subcontractor workers were compromised. The company confirmed that no customer information was affected.
"We have confirmed that personal data of our employees and staff working at our subcontractors has been leaked from our internal intranet system," the IT firm said in a press release about the incident.
According to Yonhap, the leaked data included corporate ID numbers, names, departments and IP addresses tied to Shinsegae Group staff and subcontractor personnel. The company added that customer data remained intact.
Shinsegae first spotted the breach on Wednesday and notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency by Friday afternoon. Once the leak was detected, the IT division immediately launched an emergency investigation and implemented protective measures. A malware infection is suspected to have triggered the breach, though the exact cause is still under review. "We are currently investigating the exact cause of the incident," a Shinsegae official said.
Shinsegae is a leading South Korean retailer, operating department stores, duty‑free shops, the discount chain E‑Mart, and the Starbucks franchise in the country.
Coupang recovers leaked customer data
In a related matter, e‑commerce giant Coupang said it has retrieved all personal information that was leaked from about 3,000 customer accounts and confirmed that none of the data was shared externally. Using forensic analysis, Coupang identified and apprehended a former employee who admitted to accessing basic customer data from roughly 33 million accounts using stolen security keys. Only a small fraction—about 3,000 accounts—was actually saved and then deleted by the suspect.
Last month, the Korean government formed a public‑private task force to investigate the broader Coupang breach that impacted 33.7 million users.
