North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un says his country is open to restarting talks with the United States, but only if Washington shifts away from pushing for denuclearization and focuses instead on peaceful coexistence. Speaking at a key assembly in Pyongyang, Kim shared fond memories of former U.S. President Donald Trump and stressed that North Korea—officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)—will never give up its nuclear weapons.
Kim made these comments during the second day of the Supreme People’s Assembly session on September 22. He acknowledged that the current U.S. and South Korean governments seem willing to talk and ease tensions. But he warned that their real goal hasn’t changed: to undermine North Korea and dismantle its political system. Still, Kim emphasized that North Korea remains dedicated to protecting its security and promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Tensions with South Korea are high, too. Kim said North Korea won’t hold discussions or work together with Seoul right now. This comes after North Korean officials slammed recent joint military drills involving the U.S., South Korea, and Japan on September 14. Those exercises, called Freedom Edge and Iron Mace, included field training and simulations of responding to a nuclear attack—steps that Pyongyang views as direct threats.
Kim Yo Jong, a powerful figure in North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party and Kim Jong Un’s sister, called out a new U.S.-South Korea document on “Nuclear Deterrence and Nuclear Operations on the Korean Peninsula.” She described it as a “dangerous idea” that shows their ongoing hostility toward North Korea. “We’ll see this as a clear sign of their confrontational policy,” she said, adding that such aggressive moves near North Korea’s borders will only hurt the countries involved in the end.
As U.S.-North Korea relations hang in the balance, Kim’s remarks highlight the deep mistrust fueling the standoff over nuclear weapons and regional security.
