Pune, Oct 5 – National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar visited Pune and Nashik, sparking lively talks about women’s safety and empowerment.
At Savitribai Phule Pune University, Rahatkar led a session called “Nomadic and Denotified Tribes Women’s Rights Conference.” The talk tackled the challenges faced by women in marginalised tribal communities and urged the university’s geology department to step up support.
Earlier in the day, the former mayor of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar told students and faculty that gender equality should start at home, not just in schools, colleges or offices.
In Nashik, she spoke about the district’s local committees (LCs) that handle sexual‑harassment complaints. Rahatkar said the LCs still have a long way to go, especially in protecting women in the unorganised sector. She promised the NCW would push harder on that front.
“Women are equal partners in nation‑building,” she said. She highlighted the NCW’s ongoing focus on women’s health, nutrition and education. Rahatkar detailed a new program that teaches and nourishes girls from pre‑primary levels.
On X, Rahatkar highlighted the International Conference on “Empowerment of Women in the Contemporary World: Challenges and Solutions,” hosted by N.B. Thakur Law College of Gokhale Education Society in Nashik.
“We need healthy, educated, economically independent women for a strong family, society and nation,” she added. “By merging health, nutrition, employment, workplace safety, digital skills, political participation, legal awareness, social security, and positive media, we can truly empower women.”
