Gujarat: Chess championship at PM SHRI school sees vast participation

Young Chess Stars Shine at National Girls’ Chess Championship in Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar kicked off an exciting national-level chess competition for girls on Monday at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya School No. 1. This event is part of the 54th National Sports Competition, organized by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and it brings together talented young players from across India.

A total of 216 girls from various regional Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) are competing in the Under-17 and Under-19 categories. These young athletes traveled from all corners of the country, making it a true showcase of India’s budding chess talent.

The inauguration started with a warm, traditional welcome for the teams and guests from pan-India. Organizers kept things eco-friendly with the ‘Deepshikha (Torch) Prajwalan’ lighting ceremony and a ‘Green Welcome’. Students added a fun touch by singing a welcome song, turning the venue into a lively, musical space.

The girls looked thrilled and full of energy. One player from Punjab, representing the Chandigarh region, shared her excitement: "I feel very happy and lucky to be here." It’s moments like these that highlight the joy of national sports events for students.

Meena Joshi, Assistant Commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and the chief guest, addressed the gathering. "We have 216 participants from 25 regions, along with 25 escorts," she said. "This national chess championship aims to motivate our students to shine in sports too." She stressed how chess builds discipline, unity, and sharp mental skills—key lessons for young minds.

The event featured captivating cultural performances that kept everyone hooked. The players then took an oath, promising fair play and full commitment to the competition.

Well-known chess player Vishwa Vasanwala joined as a special guest and inspired the girls. "Drop your shyness and join in as much as you can," she urged. As Gujarat’s first chess champion to represent India, Vishwa has won medals at the Asian Commonwealth, bringing pride to the nation. "Today, Gandhinagar feels like mini-India with students from different states competing here," she added.

This championship happens at PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, part of a big government scheme to upgrade over 14,500 schools across India. The goal? Create welcoming spaces where every student thrives. Out of these, 834 KVS schools are now PM SHRI schools, with the program running until 2027 to boost education and sports for rising India.

As the games get underway, all eyes are on these young chess prodigies. Stay tuned for updates on who will claim the top spots in this national girls’ chess event!
