BJP Picks Newcomer Lalhmingthanga for Mizoram’s Dampa Bypoll
In a big move for the upcoming Dampa assembly bypoll in Mizoram, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its candidate. BJP’s National General Secretary Arun Singh shared the news, saying the party’s Central Election Committee chose Lalhmingthanga to contest from the Dampa seat in western Mizoram’s Mamit district.
Lalhmingthanga, who recently switched to the BJP, is stepping into the spotlight for this key election. The Dampa constituency became vacant after sitting Mizo National Front (MNF) MLA Lalrintluanga passed away on July 21. This border area, right next to Bangladesh, has a large minority community, including Chakmas and Reang tribals, making it a hot spot for political action.
The Election Commission hasn’t released the bypoll schedule yet, but experts predict a tough four-way fight. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has picked popular Mizo singer Vanlalsailova as its candidate, while the MNF is fielding former health minister R. Lalthangliana. Both parties are ready to battle it out.
Meanwhile, Mizoram Congress chief Lal Thanzara is optimistic about his party’s chances. "The people of Dampa trust Congress deeply— we’ve ruled the state for years," he said. Thanzara, younger brother of Congress veteran and former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, believes a win here could boost their hopes for the 2028 Mizoram assembly elections. He also mentioned preparations for the 2026 Aizawl Municipal Corporation polls as a key step toward returning to power.
Thanzara pointed out that many in Mizoram felt let down after Congress lost the 2023 assembly elections. He even said the current ZPM government’s moves are slowly opening doors for Congress to make a comeback in the northeastern state.
