Roadshows, neighbourhood visits in new campaign push to raise awareness on residential fire risks

Singapore’s town councils are cracking down on clutter in HDB community spaces to keep corridors and passageways clear during a fire.

The move comes after concerns that furniture, bags, and other items can block emergency exits and slow evacuation. “We want people to leave safely and quickly when an emergency occurs,” said a council spokesperson.

Councils will now conduct regular inspections in every block’s hallways, stairwells and shared walkways. If an object is found that might obstruct a route, staff will remove it or advise residents to relocate it.

The initiative is part of a broader push to improve fire safety for Singapore’s public housing residents. By keeping common areas free of obstacles, councils aim to lower evacuation times and reduce the risk of injuries in an emergency.
