3rd ODI: Whole game is coming together nicely, says Virat Kohli after guiding India to nine-wicket win over SA

In the opening match of India’s three‑day ODI series against South Africa, the return of the seasoned top‑order batsman Virat Kohli was keenly watched. With selectors leaning toward fresh talent, Kohli felt the need to prove he remains a cornerstone for the forthcoming 2027 World Cup. He answered the call with a stunning performance, amassing 302 runs at an exceptional 151.00 average. He struck consecutive centuries in the first two games and capped the series with an unbeaten 65, guiding India to a 271/1 victory by nine wickets and 61 balls to spare.
After dismissing his critics with this display, Kohli said what mattered most to him was that he could bat naturally and that his game was falling into place.
“Just playing the way I have this series has been the most satisfying for me. Feel really free in my mind; the whole game is coming together nicely. I’ve tried to maintain my own standards and make an impact. I can bat long and according to the situation,” he explained, a sentiment that earned him Player of the Series honours.
He acknowledged that pressure and moments of doubt crept in, especially as the team’s expectations rose. Nonetheless, Kohli began the series just as he had finished the Australian tour, adding a half‑century and a commanding century at the start.
“You have many phases where you feel doubt. You feel nervous, especially in batting, where one mistake can cost you. It’s a whole journey, getting better, becoming a better person. I can realise the negative thinking patterns, knowing and working on that helps the temperament. I’m glad to still be contributing to the team,” he reflected.
When asked about the sharp increase in sixes in the final innings, the 37‑year‑old from Delhi said his confidence lets him take risks.
“When I play freely, I know I can hit sixes. Just wanted to push my boundaries and do well. The first innings was the best of this series. I hadn’t played since Australia, but the energy on the day helps take risks. That opened me up in a way I’ve not felt in a while. Grateful for how the games have gone. Must‑win brings the best out of us. I want to make a play. Happy Rohit and I can help the team even now,” he added at Saturday’s post‑match ceremony.
