
In Chandigarh on Friday, the IPS Officers’ Association (Haryana Cadre) reacted with deep sadness to the sudden death of senior police officer Y. Puran Kumar, an IPS officer from the 2001 batch.
The association’s members gathered to offer prayers for the officer’s eternal peace and to support his family. A delegation led by Hardeep Singh Doon, Additional Director General of Police (Telecom, Highways and Traffic), visited his wife, Amneet P. Kumar, IAS, at their home to convey personal condolences. Senior officers promised the family all the help they need during this difficult time.
During the meeting, members observed a two‑minute silence to honor the late officer.
Background of the officer
Y. Puran Kumar, 49, served as the Inspector General of Police in Haryana. He had been transferred to Sunaria Jail, Rohtak, last month. His career included raising questions about promotions among officers from the 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2005 batches. An engineering graduate, he was born on 19 May 1973 and was slated to retire in May 2033.
Details of the death
Police say the officer died by suicide on Tuesday night at his home in Sector 11, Chandigarh. He allegedly fired his service revolver; his daughter found him in the basement. The Chandigarh Superintendent of Police, Kanwardeep Kaur, confirmed receiving the report at 1:30 p.m. Earlier, it was reported that Kumar had taken a firearm from the resident of 116, Sector 11, on Monday.
