Healthcare must enable more private sector participation to attain global benchmarks: Minister

New Delhi, Oct 24 – India’s health policy is getting a shake‑up, says the Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, Abhishek Singh.
At a virtual kick‑off of the “TREAT‑DM 2025” diabetes conference, Singh urged the country to cut its heavy reliance on government money and invite more private investment and collaboration.

“We need to move away from a siloed, government‑only model,” he said. “A joint effort by the public and private sectors, along with philanthropic groups, can lift our research to global standards.”

He highlighted how young India has already blurred the border between government labs and industry. Prime Minister Modi’s reforms have opened the space, nuclear, and biotech sectors to wider participation, producing historic results.

Examples:
* The first successful Indian gene‑therapy trial for haemophilia, a partnership between the Department of Biotechnology and Christian Medical College in Vellore.
* The discovery of the antibiotic Nafithromycin, made possible through a government‑industry collaboration, now helps treat drug‑resistant infections in diabetics and immune‑suppressed patients.

Singh also praised India’s vaccine achievements. “Our DNA vaccines have reached almost 200 countries,” he added, underscoring the nation’s blend of self‑reliance and global outreach.

A key point was the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), which has secured ₹50,000 crore for five years—₹36,000 crore of that coming from non‑government sources. “This marks a real shift toward a self‑sustaining research model that matches world best practices,” Singh said.

He called on scientists to align their work with the vision of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047, stressing that India’s scientific future hinges on innovation, self‑reliance, and international collaboration.
