Delaware trooper killed at DMV remembered as dependable following tragic death: ‘Act of pure evil’
A Delaware state trooper was fatally shot at a Department of Motor Vehicles office near Wilmington on Tuesday, police said.
Cpl. Matthew “Ty” Snook, 34, was working overtime at the Hockessin‑area DMV when a 44‑year‑old gunman opened fire. Snook first shoved a nearby employee out of the way before he was struck again. He was taken to a hospital where he later died, and the gunman was also shot down by another officer and later pronounced dead.
Snook was a lifelong Delawarean who earned a scholarship‑supported degree from the University of Maryland, where he wrestled on the college team. After ten years in the trooper’s squad, he was described by state police as “dependable, professional and committed.” The agency said he was a trusted partner and beloved community member, adding condolences to his wife, who is also a mother of their 1‑year‑old daughter.
An official support fund for the family calls him a “loving husband, a devoted father, and a deeply cherished friend.” The fund’s organizer added that “those who knew him remember his steady presence, his kindness, and his unwavering commitment to the people he loved.” “Family meant everything to Ty, and he worked every day to provide, protect, and be present for those closest to him,” the statement read.
At a Wednesday news conference, Gov. Matt Meyer called the shooting “an act of pure evil” and said that the bravery of several troopers and other officers likely prevented an even worse outcome. He also announced that all state DMV offices would remain closed, with the exception of the site of the shooting scheduled to reopen on Monday. Authorities have not yet released the gunman’s identity or motive.
