We did not even test our video fearing it could be leaked, says S S Rajamouli

SS Rajamouli has spoken about the effort his team poured into keeping the buzz for his upcoming film, Varanasi, under wraps. He opened up after a drone‑driven leak exposed a still from the movie, rattling the makers.
The title was unveiled during a live event in Hyderabad. The production company set up a huge screen to give fans a taste of the film’s grand scale. Technical glitches briefly interrupted the teaser, but the crew fixed the problem and the audience still got to see a full‑size preview.
While the team was working through the night to test the display, Rajamouli explained the glitch. He said the crew had laid heavy black cloths over the stage and used cranes to keep the video under wraps. “We were planning to test the teaser at 2 a.m., but somebody showed up with a drone,” he says. “They recorded whatever we were about to show and posted it online. One drone, and the year‑long work of thousands of people and millions of rupees went public.”
Mahesh Babu stars in the movie as a character named Rudhra, and the director hinted that the film will also introduce a new premium large‑scale format for IMAX screens, adding a fresh technical angle to Indian cinema.
The leak has mortified the team, but Rajamouli remains proud of the film’s potential to deliver a large‑scale cinematic experience. The Varanasi announcement has already sparked great anticipation among fans worldwide.
