A 38-year-old man in Bengaluru just discovered a shocking secret about his body: he was born with three kidneys. The rare condition stayed hidden for years until nagging pain on the left side of his abdomen and repeated urinary tract infections forced him to seek help.
He headed to Medicover Hospitals in Whitefield, where scans uncovered the surprise—two kidneys on his left side. The upper one was blocked in its urinary passage, no longer working, and swollen to about 10 cm, like an overinflated balloon. That explained his ongoing discomfort and frequent infections.
Doctors, led by Dr. Pramod S, a robotic urologist and renal transplant surgeon, stepped in with a high-tech fix: robotic nephrectomy. This precise procedure uses robot-assisted tools to remove the problematic kidney while keeping the healthy lower one and its blood vessels intact.
The surgery went smoothly, and the patient bounced back quickly. Now, he’s finally free from the pain and infections that had ruled his life for two years.
Dr. Pramod S shared his thoughts on the case: “We don’t see conditions like this often. Robotic technology let us operate with pinpoint accuracy and protect the healthy kidney. The real win is seeing the patient live pain-free after years of struggle.”
Stories like this show how robotic kidney surgery is changing lives in India, making complex treatments safer and more effective right here in Bengaluru hospitals.
