Former cricketer Mithun Manhas is leading the race to become the next BCCI president, as top Indian cricket officials gathered for an informal chat in New Delhi on Saturday.
At 45, Manhas built his career playing domestic cricket for Delhi and later Jammu and Kashmir. After hanging up his boots, he jumped into coaching and stayed active in growing the game from the ground up. People close to the scene say his cool-headed style and deep knowledge of cricket basics make him a top pick.
Several big names in Indian cricket view Manhas as the go-to consensus choice. He could help smooth out tensions between different state cricket associations. His experience as a first-class player and coach has boosted his chances for the top spot at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The Saturday meeting brought together senior BCCI folks and state leaders to talk about possible candidates for president. While other seasoned admins got mentions, Manhas earned solid support from key influencers.
The BCCI president’s role packs a punch—not just in running Indian cricket but also on the global stage. With ICC elections coming up later this year, everyone’s eyes will be on who takes the helm.
If Manhas wins, he’ll join the ranks of ex-players like Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny who’ve led the board. Experts note this fits a bigger shift: bringing in folks with real on-field experience to handle admin duties.
State units will hash out the final call through consensus. Expect an official word soon.
On other fronts, Arun Dhumal from Himachal Pradesh sticks around as chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council. Rajiv Shukla looks set to keep his spot as vice-president.
The BCCI elections kick off today with nomination filings on September 21. Scrutiny and the final candidate list drop on September 23. If a vote’s needed, it happens at the Annual General Meeting on September 28.
