Runs will come soon: Short hopeful of form revival against India

After a slow start against India, Australia’s top‑order batter Matthew Short is determined to turn things around in the remaining games of the three‑match ODI series.

Short sees this series as a key chance to secure a regular spot in Australia’s lineup ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. He made his ODI debut in 2023 and has already played 16 matches. A career‑best 63 against England helped him move from the lower order into an opening position.

“Playing well feels frustrating,” Short told reporters in Adelaide after scoring only eight in Perth. “I feel good in the middle of the order, but the runs haven’t come yet. I hope they do soon.”

Australia are missing key players in the series opener: Cameron Green (side strain) and Josh Inglis (calf injury). With Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head already settling as openers, other middle‑order spots are hotly contested as the team plans for the 2027 World Cup.

Short, who shines with the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL, is ready to play wherever needed. “It’s tough to win a spot, so I stay flexible,” he said. “I’ve opened before, but I can bat down the order if required.”

Training was moved indoors this week because of rain, and a wet forecast was expected on Wednesday. However, conditions look clear for match day, boosting hopes for uninterrupted play.

Meanwhile left‑arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis is out of the ODI series due to a calf injury but aims to return for the T20I series that starts in Canberra on October 29.
