Assam Movement will always have a prime place in our history: PM Modi on Swahid Diwas

In New Delhi on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Swahid Diwas by recalling the courage of those who took part in the Assam Movement, proclaiming that their sacrifices would forever occupy a central place in our history.

Via the X platform, he noted, “Today, on Swahid Diwas, we recall the valour of all those who were a part of the Assam Movement. The Movement will always have a prime place in our history.” He went on to underline his pledge to carry forward the aspirations of the movement, especially by strengthening Assam’s cultural heritage and promoting holistic development across the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after reviewing last‑day arrangements, announced that the official inauguration would begin at 11 a.m., with the eternal flame lit at 4 p.m. as a solemn tribute. He called the event historic, marking nearly 45 years since the martyrdom of Swahid Khargeswar Talukdar.

“Tomorrow will be a landmark day for Assam. For the first time, the state government will formally honour the martyrs on this grand scale,” CM Sarma said. He added that the ceremony would be broadcast live across all districts, and that every district would simultaneously perform the patriotic song “Swahid Pranamu Tumak” as part of the statewide observance.

While Swahid Diwas has traditionally been a day of mourning, the 2025 celebration aims to elevate its significance. Schools, colleges and public institutions throughout Assam will participate, with the live broadcast ensuring that everyone can join in remembrance. The synchronous rendition of “Swahid Pranamu Tumak” is meant to unite the state in collective gratitude and reflection.

The Swahid Smarak is more than just a stone structure; it’s a thoughtfully designed space meant to carry the memories of the Assam Movement forward. Its architectural elements will guide visitors through the movement’s timeline, showcasing the events, sacrifices, and hopes that defined the period from 1979 to 1985.

The memorial will feature dedicated zones for gatherings, educational initiatives and cultural celebrations, ensuring it remains a dynamic hub for learning and contemplation rather than a mere static monument.
