New Delhi, Dec 7 – India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke on Sunday about the changing global landscape and how vital stronger ties with Japan will be for the country. He shared his thoughts on X: “Pleased to participate in the opening session of #IndiaJapanForum in New Delhi. Discussed the evolving world order and the imperative of deeper India‑Japan cooperation.”
The forum, organized by the Ananta Centre and the Ministry of External Affairs, is meant to give leaders from both sides a chance to shape the future of their partnership, fostering dialogue and joint initiatives. Its goal, as outlined in the official statement, is to deepen cooperation, seize shared opportunities, exchange ideas, build trust, and chart a common agenda for coming years.
Earlier this week, India’s envoy-designate to Japan, Nagma M. Mallick, met Japan’s Minister of Environment, Ishihara Hirotaka, to review areas where the two countries can work together. Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi, met during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, discussing ways to accelerate cooperation in innovation, defence, and talent mobility.
During the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, EAM Jaishankar and Japan’s foreign minister, Motegi Toshimitsu, spoke about expanding bilateral ties and agreed to pursue a joint vision for the next decade of India‑Japan collaboration.
India and Japan have progressively deepened their relationship: from a “Global Partnership” in 2000 to a “Strategic and Global Partnership” in 2006, and finally to a “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” in 2014, according to the MEA. Defence and security remain a cornerstone of their bond, with recent exchanges growing stronger as both nations align on peace, security, and stability in the Indo‑Pacific region.
