Dev Deepawali lit up Varanasi, turning the city’s ghats into a sea of glowing lamps and fireworks. Thousands of people gathered on the river Ganga, the sacred waterway that runs through the old city, to celebrate the festival that marks Lord Shiva’s triumph over the demon Tripurasura.
The event, held 15 days after the popular Diwali, features 88 ghats illuminated with earthen lamps, known as diyas. Even‑handed beams of light painted the banks at midnight, reflecting off the river and creating a shimmering show that drew crowds from across India—and from abroad.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared aerial photos of the celebration on his X account, writing, “Spectacular Dev Deepawali in Kashi!” The MP for Varanasi, who was elected in 2014 and re‑elected in 2024, highlighted the festival’s cultural and spiritual significance for the city’s residents and visitors alike.
Joys of the night were amplified by fireworks that exploded over the river, and colorful stalls and cultural performances added to the festive atmosphere. Boats lined the Ganga, carrying pilgrims and tourists who watched the lamps glow like stars coming down to Earth.
Local authorities organized security and crowd control, smoothing the flow of the massive visitor turnout. As the lamps flickered across temples and historic buildings, the city’s heritage and the Ganga’s timeless connection were on full display.
Dev Deepawali continues to attract devotees, tourists, and those intrigued by the city’s blend of ancient rituals and modern celebrations, underscoring Varanasi’s enduring place among India’s most sacred locations.
