Gujarat emerges as best-performing state under ‘TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’

Gujarat shines as India’s top state in the fight against tuberculosis (TB) under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. This big win comes as the country pushes to wipe out TB by 2025, and it’s all thanks to strong efforts in spotting cases early and providing free treatment.
The state has shown real dedication through the National TB Elimination Programme. Teams are actively finding TB patients across Gujarat and making sure they get complete, no-cost care in government hospitals. It’s a game-changer for public health in India, especially with TB symptoms often going unnoticed.
Take it from a real story at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. A patient who beat TB shared how free and quick treatment turned things around for him. “Early diagnosis and the right medicines helped me recover fully,” he said. It’s inspiring to hear how accessible TB treatment can be when you act fast.
But experts like Dr. Ghanshyam Borisagar, Head of the TB and Chest Department at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, urge everyone to stay alert. Common TB symptoms include a cough that won’t go away, chest pain, fever, and unexplained weight loss. “Many people brush these off as just a cold or flu,” Dr. Borisagar warns. “Don’t wait—timely TB diagnosis is key to beating it.”
To ease the burden on patients, the government steps in with the Nikshay Poshan Yojana. This scheme gives Rs 1,000 every month straight to their bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). “It covers nutrition and other needs during TB treatment,” explains Dr. Chirag Dhuvad, District TB Officer in Ahmedabad. This financial support helps TB patients in Gujarat focus on recovery without money worries.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a TB-free India by 2025, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s leadership has boosted Gujarat’s progress. In 2024 alone, the state hit 95% of its target for identifying and registering TB patients. They found 1,37,929 cases and successfully treated 1,24,581 people—impressive numbers in the battle against TB in India.
Community involvement is another highlight. Gujarat has signed up 10,682 Nikshay Mitras—volunteers who support TB patients—through the Nikshay Portal. Thanks to them, the state distributed 3,49,534 nutrition kits to those in need. This teamwork shows how public awareness and local help are driving TB elimination efforts forward.
Gujarat’s success as the best-performing state in the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan proves that with good governance, free TB treatment, and everyone’s participation, a TB-free India is within reach. If you’re spotting TB symptoms, reach out for help today—early action saves lives.
