Taiwan detects 26 PLA aircraft, 9 PLAN vessels and one ship near territory

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense spotted 26 Chinese PLA aircraft, 9 PLAN vessels, and 1 official ship buzzing around its territory until 6 a.m. today. Out of those 26 aircraft, 23 crossed the median line and flew into Taiwan’s northern, southwestern, and eastern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The ministry shared these details on social media X, saying they’ve been closely monitoring the situation and responding accordingly.

This comes right after a similar incident on September 14, when Taiwan detected 27 PLA aircraft, 14 PLAN vessels, and 6 official ships operating nearby until 6 a.m. (UTC+8). In that case, 26 of the aircraft breached the median line, entering Taiwan’s northern, central, southwestern, and eastern ADIZ. The ministry posted on X: “We have monitored the situation and responded.”

Just a day before that, on Saturday, Taiwan tracked 31 PLA aircraft, 13 PLAN vessels, and 3 official ships in the area. These repeated Chinese military incursions near Taiwan highlight the growing tensions between the two sides.

For context, Taiwan runs its own government, economy, and military as the Republic of China (ROC). But China sees Taiwan as part of its territory under the “One China” policy, with Beijing as the only legitimate capital. This dispute dates back to 1949, when the ROC government retreated to Taiwan after losing the Chinese Civil War to Mao Zedong’s Communist forces on the mainland.

These ongoing PLA aircraft and PLAN vessel activities around Taiwan keep the spotlight on the fragile cross-strait relations, raising concerns about potential escalation in the region.
