71st National Film Awards: ‘Kathal’ wins Best Hindi Film, director Yashowardhan Mishra “over the moon”

Sanya Malhotra’s quirky satire Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery just snagged the Best Hindi Feature Film award at the 71st National Film Awards in New Delhi. The ceremony on September 23 celebrated the film’s clever take on small-town India, where a determined police officer named Mahima Basor from a lower caste chases down the bizarre theft of two jackfruits from a politician’s garden.
Director Yashowardhan Mishra, making his debut with this Netflix release, couldn’t hide his joy at the event. He showed up with producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Ektaa R Kapoor, and told it’s an "unbelievable feeling." "I’m over the moon and so proud," he said. "This award goes to my entire team—we need to celebrate together!"
The win also thrilled the team at Sikhya Entertainment, including Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. In a statement, Monga described the moment as "nothing short of surreal." She praised how the story, set in Madhya Pradesh, highlights everyday humor, ironies, and social truths through Yashowardhan’s sharp writing (with Ashok Mishra) and sensitive direction. "It’s a subtle yet powerful reflection on society in small-town India," she added.
Since hitting Netflix in May 2023, Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery has won fans over with its relatable laughs and biting social commentary on caste, politics, and life in rural India. This National Film Awards honor cements its spot as a standout in Hindi cinema.
