A domestic helper in Bengaluru has been taken into police custody after an alleged murder of a pet dog in the building’s lift.
The woman, 45‑year‑old Pushpalatha, works for the owner of the puppy, Raashi Poojari. According to police, Pushpalatha smashed the young dog against the lift floor while it was on a leash. CCTV footage that the police released shows her swinging the animal in the cage door, an act described as “shocking cruelty.”
After killing the dog, Pushpalatha told security staff that the puppy had fallen out of the lift by accident – a story that raised red flags when the owner questioned the residents’ wardens. When the CCTV was reviewed, the footage confirmed the violent act inside the lift. The incident happened on Oct. 31 and was reported to authorities only on Monday.
Pushpalatha had been employed by Poojari for just over a month. She was paid ₹25,000 a month to look after the puppy, Goofy, a four‑year‑old dog. Poojari said she never had a conflict with the maid and called her “good.” She admitted she hadn’t suspected anyone until the security staff’s comments about a lift incident led her to review the video.
Poojari said: “I loved Goofy. He never bit anyone or caused trouble. I can’t explain why pushpalatha did this. She simply killed him without any reason.” She described seeing Goofy’s body with its tongue out and lying motionless after waking the puppy from a walk.
Police said they are investigating the case and will decide whether to press formal charges. The matter has drawn attention online, with many calling for a review of domestic workers’ oversight in Bengaluru.
The investigation is ongoing.
