Amid PM Modi’s praise for Kannada pride, BJP calls out Congress high command ‘culture’ in Karnataka

BJP slams Congress for “humiliating” Karnataka leaders
New Delhi, Dec. 28 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing criticism of Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal on Sunday, saying the party’s top brass is “humiliating” Karnataka’s state leadership and disrespects the people of the state.
On X, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya drew a comparison between past and present Congress conduct. He recalled what he described as the public humiliation of former Karnataka Chief Minister Veerendra Patil during former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure, and said:
“First, it was Rajiv Gandhi who publicly humiliated the towering Karnataka leader Shri Veerendra Patil. Now, decades later, the pattern repeats, with AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal lecturing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on how to run the state.”
“It is astonishing that a Chief Minister elected by the people of Karnataka is being publicly admonished by a party functionary sitting in Delhi. If all decisions must be cleared by Rahul Gandhi’s coterie, why have a Cabinet chosen by the people of Karnataka at all? This high‑command culture is not just an insult to Karnataka’s leadership; it is an insult to the people of Karnataka themselves,” he added.
Malviya’s remarks followed Venugopal’s X post about a discussion with Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar regarding the demolition of unauthorized buildings in Kogilu village near Yelahanka. Venugopal had urged the state leaders to act with compassion and keep the human impact in mind.
The BJP’s attack came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, praised efforts to preserve India’s linguistic heritage and highlighted the Kannada‑language initiative Kannada Pathshale—a programme now enrolling more than a thousand young learners in Dubai and elsewhere.
Amid this political spat, the Congress‑led Karnataka government continues to push for Kannada to appear prominently on shop signboards, sparking controversy and accusations from the centre of “Hindi imposition.” The centre has repeatedly denied the charge, saying language choice in schools is voluntary.
