Durga Puja festivities grip Tripura; vigil tightened along 856-km border with Bangladesh

As Durga Puja celebrations kick off in Tripura this Sunday, authorities have ramped up security along the state’s 856-kilometer border with Bangladesh to keep things safe and smooth. Officials shared these details on Saturday, highlighting a major push to prevent any cross-border trouble during the five-day festival.

Tripura’s top cop, Director General of Police Anurag, explained that his team has held several meetings with the Border Security Force (BSF) and other agencies. The goal? To boost vigilance and stop any unwanted incidents. “BSF leaders promised to tighten security even more,” Anurag told reporters. “They’ll step up patrols day and night to protect border villages and block any suspicious movements from across the line.”

Tripura shares its border with Bangladesh on three sides, which makes the northeastern state a hotspot for issues like illegal migration, smuggling, and other crimes. Most of the frontier is already fenced, though a few spots still need work to fully seal off infiltrators and troublemakers.

Chief Minister Manik Saha recently met with BSF and other security heads, urging them to stay closely coordinated on border threats. He noted that BSF has already increased its presence since violent unrest hit Bangladesh in June and July last year—especially after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government fell on August 5, 2024. This year’s Durga Puja security push builds on that heightened alert.

The festival is in full swing, with Saha and other leaders kicking off events by inaugurating pandals across the state. This year, Tripura expects around 3,000 community Durga Puja celebrations, a jump from 2,750 last year. In West Tripura alone, 775 community pujas are underway, plus plenty more at private homes and big estates.

To ensure peaceful festivities, police have deployed an extra 8,000 officers and forces statewide. Over 400 women police personnel and undercover teams will join the effort, keeping an eye on crowds without disrupting the fun. Anurag added that they’ve set up CCTV cameras and watchtowers at key spots—like sensitive areas, mixed neighborhoods, busy pujas, and high-traffic zones—to handle the pandal-hoppers safely.

Security isn’t just local; it’s tightened along the entire India-Bangladesh border, including sections shared with Assam. State officials have asked BSF to stay extra vigilant, ready to stop any infiltration attempts or shady cross-border activity during the Durga Puja season. With these measures in place, Tripura aims for a worry-free festival that brings communities together.
