A special laser‑gimbal that was attached to a compact handgun helped city police lock onto the suspect in the Brown University shooting, according to law‑enforcement officials and a new report released on Sunday.
The revolver and the laser‑equipped pistol were recovered in a hotel room, and the man—now labeled a “person of interest” in the investigation—was said to have traveled more than 1,150 miles from Wisconsin to Rhode Island to carry out the fatal attack, sources told CNN.
When questioned on Saturday, the suspect claimed he’d been staying in his room the whole time, the network reported.
Police later forced entry into the room early Sunday. Inside, they found the two firearms. The laser‑light on the handgun was key to identifying him, according to officials.
The suspect, a male in his 20s, was taken into custody at a Hampton Inn in Coventry, RI, where he was confronted after a knock on the door and a command to open.
Investigators also used the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey team to pinpoint the hotel location, with agency director Kash Patel thanking the FBI and partners in a statement that read, “Thanks to the men and women of the FBI and our partners for their continued teamwork. Please continue praying for the victims and their families — as well as all those at Brown University.”
The shooting, which took place during a final‑exam review session for an economics class on Saturday, left two students dead and nine more wounded. The motive remains unknown, and it is still unclear whether the suspect has any ties to the university.
Police have yet to name the victims, noting that not all families have been informed of their loved ones’ conditions. The campus shelter‑in‑place order was lifted, but all final examinations have been canceled following the incident.
