Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – A top Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and lawmaker slammed the government’s approach to the unrest in Ladakh on Saturday.
MY Tarigami, a CPI-M MLA, called the recent events in Ladakh deeply unfortunate. He described the government’s restrictions and arrests as outright shameful during a press conference.
Tarigami traced the problems back to August 5, 2019, when India passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. “This act sparked the chaos we’re seeing today in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. He argued that the changes have stripped people of their power to shape their own future and handle local issues together.
India’s real power, according to Tarigami, comes from its unity in diversity – people from all walks of life, with different languages, religions, and cultures, choosing to build a shared republic. But he warned that the government’s moves have hurt not just the region, but the entire nation.
People in Ladakh are pushing for more recognition, Tarigami explained. They have huge stretches of land but a small population and few resources. Their main worry? Protecting their territory from big corporate players who see it as a goldmine for profits.
While the Reorganisation Act set up a new assembly for Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh got no such setup, he pointed out. Ladakh’s residents have always stressed their key role in deciding the path forward for Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh as a whole.
In related news, police in Ladakh arrested 44 people linked to violent clashes in Leh on September 24. Director General of Police SD Singh Jamwal shared the update on Saturday.
