In Kochi on Monday, the Kerala Motor Vehicle Department rolled up a dramatic protest against noise pollution by crushing about 200 illegal air horns with a road roller. The move was part of a state‑wide crackdown on traffic violations, led by Transport Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar—a film star turned politician who is pushing hard to stop the rampant use of horns on roads.
Kochi’s motor‑vehicle inspectors began sweeping the city on Oct. 13, seizing dozens of offending horns from private cars and inter‑state buses. The supermarkets covered the shows with TV crews, turning the destruction into a public demonstration of the government’s zero‑tolerance stance on unlawful vehicle modifications.
The crackdown comes after a disturbing incident in Kothamangalam where a bus driver used an air horn while speeding into a bus stand, sparking anger among commuters. Authorities suspended the driver’s license and revoked the bus’s permit. In response, officials have asked all hostels, buses, and other vehicles to keep accurate paperwork and follow traffic rules.
Minister Ganesh Kumar warned that the practice has to end, saying the state will enforce compliance decisively. He told reporters that the public crushing of horns sends a clear message to anyone who thinks they can flout noise‑pollution and safety laws.
Similar enforcement actions are expected in other districts soon. The campaign underscores Kerala’s commitment to reducing noise pollution, improving road safety, and ensuring strict adherence to traffic regulations.
