Bhopal, Oct 9 – The tragedy that has killed more than 20 children in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, is getting even closer to the political spotlight.
Rahul Gandhi, a senior Congress leader, is expected to travel to Chhindwara and nearby villages next week to meet families that lost loved ones to the toxic Coldrif cough syrup. No official visit schedule has been released, but party insiders say the trip is an act of compassion rather than a political move.
The Coldrif syrup, sold by Sresan Pharmaceuticals of Tamil Nadu, has been found with dangerous levels of diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic industrial solvent that exceeded legal limits. The product already triggered a nationwide ban, and the Madhya Pradesh police arrested the manufacturer’s key executives on Wednesday.
State officials have taken some steps: the drug controller and chief medical and health officer of Chhindwara were removed, a deputy director and two drug inspectors were suspended. Yet many in the community still demand a full, transparent investigation – especially as four children remain in critical condition in Nagpur hospitals.
BJP leaders, led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, are calling the Congress on “political opportunism,” while Madhya Pradesh’s minister Narendra Shivaji Patel has pointed fingers at the Tamil Nadu government for overlooking drug inspections.
Medical professionals statewide have shown solidarity. During a virtual meeting, representatives from all regional medical colleges pledged to wear black badges in protest against the arrest of government doctor Praveen Soni, who many claim is being unfairly targeted while senior officials evade scrutiny.
Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming visit is viewed by supporters as a way to amplify the voices of grieving families and watch over the continuing investigation. As the state government’s actions unfold, the public presses for quick justice and clear answers about who is responsible for the loss of so many innocent children.
