J&K cabinet recommends convening Assembly session from October 13

The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet has asked Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to kick off the Legislative Assembly’s autumn session on October 13. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah led the meeting in Srinagar on Tuesday, with all ministers joining in to discuss key matters.
According to sources, the group made several big decisions, including this push for the assembly to reconvene soon. The last session ended back on April 29, and under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, lawmakers can’t let more than six months pass without meeting again. That means the next one has to start by October 28 at the latest.
The previous assembly session saw some chaos. Three resolutions on restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir fell apart after disruptions from the National Conference. The trouble started when their adjournment motion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, got rejected. Reservations in jobs and education also kept popping up as a hot topic during those debates.
Expect statehood and reservations to take center stage once more when the assembly meets on October 13. The session could be short, wrapping up in just seven days by October 20.
The Reorganisation Act spells it out clearly: “The Lieutenant Governor shall, from time to time, summon the Legislative Assembly to meet at such time and place as he thinks fit, but six months shall not intervene between its last sitting in one session and the date appointed for its first sitting in the next session.”
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, who serves as the cabinet’s ex-officio secretary, was there too. He helps keep things running smoothly by coordinating between departments and making sure decisions get carried out.
