Indian Railways has increased number of daily train services to 11,740: Ashwini Vaishnaw

On Wednesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed Parliament that the average number of trains operating each day on the Indian Railways has climbed from 11,283 before the pandemic to 11,740 as of November 2025.

The network’s Mail and Express services have similarly expanded, with the daily average now at 2,238 in November 2025 compared to 1,768 pre‑COVID.

In a written answer to a Lok Sabha question, the minister explained that the timetable has been scientifically re‑engineered—with help from IIT Bombay—to streamline services and stoppages. The overhaul aims to boost passenger safety by carving out maintenance corridors, increasing train speeds, and improving on‑time performance.

Since November 2021, Express train operations have followed the new, rationalised timetable and fixed headways.

He added that 164 Vande Bharat services featuring Chair Cars are now running, alongside a growing fleet that includes newer variants and additional Vande Bharat Expresses.

To serve longer overnight journeys, a Sleeper‑class version of the Vande Bharat has been developed indigenously. Two rakes are already in factory trials.

Notable technological and safety upgrades on the Sleeper models include the KAVACH protection system, a cruising speed of 160 km/h with enhanced acceleration, crashworthy semi‑permanent couplers and anti‑climber devices, fire‑barrier doors on each coach, and an aerosol‑based fire‑detection and suppression system in electrical cabinets and lavatories.

The trains also feature regenerative braking for energy efficiency, air‑conditioned coaches equipped with an indigenous UV‑C lamp disinfection system, centrally controlled automatic plug doors, and fully sealed, wider gangways.

For emergencies, an in‑train talk‑back unit links passengers directly with the train manager or locomotive driver. Additionally, a centralised Coach Monitoring System keeps tabs on key passenger amenities such as climate control and lighting.
