Delhi Court Takes Note of Charge Sheet in AQIS Terror Module Case
A Delhi court has officially recognized the charge sheet filed by police against Dr. Ishtiyaq and seven others in a major Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) training module case. This development came on Wednesday at the Patiala House Court in New Delhi.
Back in February, Delhi Police submitted the initial charge sheet after arresting the suspects last year. Additional Sessions Judge Dr. Hardeep Kaur reviewed it following a supplementary charge sheet with prosecution sanctions from the police. She has now ordered the police to share copies of both documents with the accused. The next hearing is set for September 22.
The case falls under the strict anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Out of 11 people arrested initially, three didn’t make it to the charge sheet. The named accused include Anamul Ansari, Shabaz Ansari, Altaf Ansari, Mohd. Rizwan, Motiur Rehaman, Mufti Rehmatullah, Faizan Ahmed, Dr. Ishtiyaq Ahmed, Rizwan Arshad, and Umar Farooq. Hasan Ansari remains uncharged.
These arrests happened on August 22, 2024, thanks to a joint operation by Delhi Police’s Special Cell and forces from Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The group was part of an AQIS-inspired terror module reportedly led by Dr. Ishtiyaq from Ranchi, Jharkhand. Police say they planned to declare a "Khilafat" and carry out serious attacks across India.
The module members got brainwashed and trained with weapons at secret spots. In fact, six suspects were caught red-handed during weapon-handling training in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. Eight more came from Jharkhand and UP for questioning.
On September 12, the court sent all 11 arrested members to judicial custody after police wrapped up their interrogations. Earlier, on December 12, 2024, the Delhi High Court gave police a 90-day extension to finish the probe in this AQIS Jharkhand training module case. The trial court had initially turned down the request, prompting police to appeal to the high court.
During the raids, police seized a haul of dangerous items: one AK-47 rifle, a .38 bore revolver, live cartridges in .38, .32, and AK-47 calibers, a dummy INSAS rifle, an air rifle, an iron elbow pipe, a hand grenade, a remote control device, wires, batteries, a table watch, ground sheets, a camping tent, and even some biscuits.
This bust highlights ongoing efforts to dismantle terror networks like AQIS in India. Stay tuned for updates as the case progresses in court.
