Rekha Gupta, Delhi’s chief minister, announced that the state will open 100 Atal Canteens across the city, offering balanced meals for just Rs 5. The first phase is set to launch on December 25, coinciding with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary.
The new Atal Thali Yojana is more than a food‑distribution program. “We want to make sure no one in Delhi goes hungry,” Gupta said. The initiative focuses on dignity and social equality, giving affordable meals to the city’s poor and working families.
A committee has already cleared the plans for the canteens. The sites were chosen carefully, and the menus will include classic staples: lentils and rice, fresh vegetables, and rotis. Each centre will serve 500 breakfast foods and 500 evening meals, with government subsidies ensuring quality.
To keep the process fair, the government will use a digital token system instead of paper coupons. All transactions will be monitored through CCTV cameras linked to the digital platform of the Delhi Urban Services Infrastructure Board, guaranteeing transparency.
The kitchens will feature modern appliances, LPG cooking, industrial RO water, and cold storage. Every meal and ingredient will undergo taste tests and safety checks by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and laboratories accredited by NABL. The organisers must submit monthly reports on distribution, staff health checks, fire safety certificates, and valid FSSAI licences.
“This program is a key step toward giving every Delhiite a dignified life,” Gupta said. The Atal Canteens aim to become a staple of the city, ensuring that no one needs to sleep hungry. Providing affordable, clean, and nutritious food is a firm commitment of the Delhi government.
