Israeli army kills Palestinian man at West Bank checkpoint

A Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces at a military checkpoint in the northern West Bank, according to local Palestinian officials and the Israeli army.

The incident took place near the village of Burin, southwest of Nablus. Israeli military officials described the man as a “terrorist” who approached soldiers and threw a suspicious object. The military says the man did not follow instructions, which led them to open fire as part of a routine arrest operation. No Israeli soldiers were injured in the incident.

Palestinian sources identified the man as 57-year-old Ahmed Abdel Fattah Shahadeh from Urif, a town in the Nablus area. Reports say that the shooting happened close to the Al-Murabba’a checkpoint.

Emergency services, including the Red Crescent ambulance, responded to the scene, but Palestinian medics say they were stopped by Israeli soldiers from reaching the wounded man.

In a separate update, the Israeli military reported that in the past week, they had arrested 70 Palestinians, seized weapons like rifles and pistols, and destroyed several explosive devices across different West Bank towns.

The West Bank is home to over 3.3 million Palestinians and more than 720,000 Israeli settlers. The territories, captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East War, have seen ongoing tensions. Israel has built settlements there, which most of the international community considers illegal under international law.

Palestinians frequently face hardship at Israeli checkpoints, often encountering searches, searches, and sometimes violence. A Palestinian rights group, CWRC, reports there are nearly 900 Israeli barriers and checkpoints in the area, restricting movement for Palestinians. These include over 150 gates added recently after October 2023.

The situation has become increasingly tense since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023. There has been a rise in settlement expansion, demolition of Palestinian homes, and forced displacement — actions that Palestinian officials say threaten the chances of a peaceful two-state solution to the conflict.

This ongoing violence and tense situation continue to impact lives in the West Bank, fueling concern about further escalation in the region.
