“Leading India in World Cup special for me”: Harmanpreet Kaur

Indian women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur can’t hide her thrill as the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 kicks off in just a few days. Leading her team in this major tournament feels like a dream come true for her, especially on home soil.

At the lively Captains Day event in Bengaluru and Colombo, leaders from all participating teams shared their hype and confidence. With only four days until the action starts on September 30, the excitement is building fast. The tournament runs through November 2, featuring 31 matches across five venues in India and Sri Lanka. It all begins with India taking on Sri Lanka at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.

“Representing your country is always special, but captaining in an ODI World Cup? That’s next level for me,” Harmanpreet told reporters. She pointed out how every team has a real shot at the title, proving women’s cricket has leveled up big time. “We’re seeing packed stadiums now, which we love—it’s a first for us. A home World Cup brings huge expectations, but with fans cheering us on, we’ll give everything we’ve got.”

Harmanpreet brings serious firepower to the table. She’s the ninth-top run-scorer in World Cup history, with 876 runs from 26 matches at an average of 51.52. That includes three centuries and four fifties, with her highest score of 171 not out.

India’s prep hasn’t been smooth, though. They dropped a 1-2 series to Australia at home and suffered a heavy 152-run defeat to England in a warm-up match in Bengaluru on Thursday. Still, since their group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup, the team has notched 25 wins in 38 ODIs, with 12 losses and one tie.

Over in the Sri Lanka camp, captain Chamari Athapaththu is pumped about tapping into the home crowd’s energy. “We’re playing on our turf, and I know tons of Sri Lankans will show up to back us,” she said. She remembered the buzzing atmosphere from the recent Asia Cup and wants the same vibe for their World Cup games. “We’ll take it one match at a time, play our natural game without extra pressure, and just enjoy the ride.”

This five-week showdown promises thrilling cricket and a new champion by November 2, boosting the global rise of women’s cricket.
