Odisha: Over 10,000 take to streets, call for ‘Cuttack Bandh’

In the heart of Odisha’s city of Cuttack, a huge protest swirled on Monday, October 6. More than 10,000 people gathered on Bajrakbati Road in a march organized by the Biswa Hindu Parisad and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The rally was led by BJP candidate Nayan Mohanty, who called for a “Hindu‑only” Cuttack and urged the removal of minority communities from the area.

The streets of the city are still tense. Protesters hold the city’s main roads until Monday, when a full city shutdown—called a Cuttack bandh—has been announced. Shouting slogans that call for a single‑religion identity, the demonstrators threaten to disrupt daily life. Residents are preparing for a possible halt in traffic, offices, and public services.

The unrest follows a violent clash between Hindu and Muslim groups during Dussehra procession preparations. The scuffle left several people injured, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police. Local leaders Sofia Firdous and former MLA Md. Moquim have publicly called the incident “unfortunate” and urged citizens to keep the historic harmony that defines Cuttack. Firdous stressed that the city must stay united, while Moquim promised strict penalties for those responsible.

In response, the Odisha government has imposed a 24‑hour internet shutdown beginning at 7 pm Sunday, extending through Monday 7 pm. The ban cuts social‑media platforms—WhatsApp, Facebook, X, and others—in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, Cuttack Development Authority, and 42 Maoza areas. The order, issued under the Indian Telegraph Act and related emergency rules, also prohibits mobile data access in the region.

As tensions rise, residents and leaders alike emphasize the need for calm and law‑enforcement fairness. The government’s internet restrictions aim to prevent further escalation, but the atmosphere remains charged, with many hoping for a quick return to normalcy.
