In Chhindwara, a city in Madhya Pradesh, India, authorities report that at least 14 people died after drinking a cough syrup believed to be tampered with. Eight children were also taken to Chhindwara Nagpur Hospital for treatment.
The district’s Additional Magistrate, Dhirendra Singh, said a drug‑control team has begun raids across Chhindwara and nearby areas. The team is looking for the banned cough syrup and has already seized suspect batches. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is on its way to Tamil Nadu, where the company that makes the syrup—Sresan Pharmaceuticals—operates.
Police have filed a case against Dr Pradeep Soni, the doctor who prescribed the syrup. He is currently suspended by the state government under orders from Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, after reports emerged that infant deaths were linked to the drug. Sresan Pharmaceuticals is also listed as a primary accused.
Following the deaths, the Madhya Pradesh government has imposed a statewide ban on the sale of the cough syrup. The ban comes as families and activists demand accountability for what they say is a preventable tragedy.
Activists and Congress party workers in Bhopal and Jaipur have staged protests, calling on Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla and Health Minister Shukla to resign. Protesters carried signs calling for responsibility over the “death of innocent children.”
