New Delhi, Dec 8 (LatestNewsX) – Parliament will convene a special session on Monday to mark the 150th anniversary of the patriotic anthem “Vande Mataram.” Bihar’s minister and the party’s state chief, Dilip Jaiswal, slammed the Congress for what he said was a betrayal of the country’s interests.
The debate comes at a moment when the song’s historical, cultural, and patriotic weight is under close scrutiny, as ruling‑party leaders accuse opposition figures of playing divisive politics. Speaking to LatestNewsX, Dilip Jaiswal added, “Those who want to divide the country — Congress and its INDIA bloc groups — have shown their true colours. You might have seen a young Congress member raising slogans like our country will be divided…”.
Echoing this viewpoint, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal noted, “The country is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the song Vande Mataram on 8 December, as decided by the Business Advisory Committee. In this context, discussions on the occasion are scheduled in the Lok Sabha today and will continue in the Rajya Sabha tomorrow.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to open the Lok Sabha debate, aiming to shed light on lesser‑known aspects of the anthem. He is expected to focus on its role in India’s freedom movement, its historical importance, and its relevance to contemporary society. Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, “Vande Mataram” first appeared in the literary magazine Bangadarshan on 7 November 1875.
Opposition members are keenly awaiting the Prime Minister’s remarks. Last month, at a commemorative event for the song, Modi accused the Congress of “removing important stanzas” from the original poem in its 1937 Faizabad session, claiming the decision helped sow the seeds of Partition. The Congress, however, argued that the alterations were made following Rabindranath Tagore’s advice to accommodate representatives of different communities.
The Rajya Sabha discussion on “Vande Mataram” is slated to begin on Tuesday, likely spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah. In the Lok Sabha, the ruling NDA has been allocated three of the ten hours earmarked for the debate, underscoring the government’s emphasis on this patriotic discourse.
