Humayun Kabir’s seat to be shifted in Bengal Assembly, may sit next to Partha Chatterjee

On December 8, LatestNewsX reported that Humayun Kabir, the MLA representing Bharatpur, is likely to have his seat shifted in the West Bengal Assembly after the Trinamool Congress suspended him. The party’s decision came after he went ahead with laying the foundation stone for a mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, an act the TMC deemed unacceptable. Nirmal Ghosh, the Assembly whip for the TMC, said the party is “keeping an eye on the matter” and expects to settle the issue soon. He added, “We are keeping an eye on the matter. A decision will be made on the seating arrangements of the suspended MLAs, including Kabir, in the Assembly in the next few days.”

Although Kabir had faced a six‑year suspension for anti‑party activity, he announced on Sunday that he would remain a Trinamool MLA, withdrawing his earlier threat to resign. Party insiders believe the upcoming winter and interim budget sessions will prompt a re‑allocation of seats to keep the rebellious MLA at arm’s length as the assembly term nears its end. After being released from judicial custody, Kabir indicated his intention to attend the next session. Reports suggest he may be seated beside fellow suspended TMC member Partha Chatterjee, who was suspended in 2022 following an arrest by the Enforcement Directorate over a school‑service‑commission recruitment scandal. Chatterjee, a former Trinamool general secretary, similarly expressed a desire to participate after his release. With only a few months left before the assembly is dissolved for next year’s elections, the winter session and an interim budget meeting are scheduled. Last week, the TMC suspended Kabir again after he defied the party’s directives by proceeding with the mosque‑foundation ceremony in Beldanga, Murshidabad, further straining leadership, particularly Mamata Banerjee.
