“Have to build a strong bridge between people of hills and valley in Manipur”: PM Modi in Imphal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a heartfelt appeal for unity in Manipur during his visit to Imphal on Saturday. He stressed the urgent need to bridge the gap between the hill and valley communities, calling any violence in the state a tragedy that dishonors ancestors and harms future generations. “We must unite to bring peace and development to Manipur,” Modi told the crowd, urging everyone to work together.

Speaking to the people, Modi highlighted Manipur’s proud history in India’s freedom struggle. He pointed out that the Indian National Army first hoisted the tricolor here, earning the state the nickname “gateway to India’s freedom” from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. “Manipur has given heroic sacrifices for our nation. Our government draws inspiration from these great figures to build a stronger future,” he said.

This visit marks Modi’s first trip to Manipur in two years, amid the ethnic violence that broke out in May 2023 between the majority Meitei community and Kuki tribal groups. The conflict has displaced thousands, shattered social bonds, and slowed down the economy. Earlier, Modi met with internally displaced persons (IDPs) who lost their homes in the clashes. He assured them of the government’s full support to restore normalcy.

“Peace and stability must return to Manipur. We want lives in relief camps to get back to normal,” Modi said. He announced that the central government has approved 7,000 new houses for the displaced families, a big step toward rehabilitation in the violence-hit state.

Modi also reaffirmed his commitment to Manipur’s growth, declaring that the 21st century belongs to the Northeast. He shared impressive stats: Before 2014, Manipur’s growth rate was under 1%. Now, it’s surging ahead many times faster, thanks to focused development efforts. “India’s government prioritizes Manipur’s progress, and we’re seeing real results,” he added.

A wave of infrastructure projects is transforming the state. Road construction and national highways are speeding up, with plans to connect every village. Modi kicked off several key initiatives worth over Rs 1,200 crore, including the new Civil Secretariat and IT SEZ Building at Mantripukhri, a modern Police Headquarters, Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata, and upgrades to the iconic Ima Markets—unique all-women markets—in four districts.

In a tribute to Manipur’s brave hearts, Modi praised the state’s contributions to national security. He lauded Operation Sindoor, where Indian forces struck fear into the Pakistani army. “Many of Manipur’s sons and daughters serve with valor across India,” he said, saluting BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham, who lost his life in the operation. “His sacrifice will never be forgotten. Manipur’s culture and its youth— from athletes to soldiers—make India proud.”

Modi’s message was clear: Unity and development will heal Manipur’s wounds and unlock its potential as a key player in Northeast India’s rise.
