Adani Enterprises to construct Kedarnath ropeway project, to cut travel time to 36 minutes

Adani Group bags big ropeway project for Kedarnath pilgrims in Uttarakhand

Ahmedabad, September 15: The Adani Group just scored a major win with its flagship company, Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL), receiving a Letter of Award from the National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML). The project? Building a state-of-the-art ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand. This Kedarnath ropeway will make one of India’s toughest pilgrimages a breeze.

AEL plans to pump in Rs 4,081 crore into this ambitious venture. The work will happen through its Roads, Metro, Rail, and Water (RMRW) division. Picture this: the 12.9 km ropeway will slash the grueling 8-9 hour trek to just 36 minutes. That’s a game-changer for devotees heading to the sacred Kedarnath shrine!

Once up and running, the ropeway can handle 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction. With around 20 lakh pilgrims visiting Kedarnath every year, this setup promises safer, quicker trips and a way better overall experience. No more back-breaking hikes—hello, smooth aerial ride!

The Kedarnath ropeway project fits right into the government’s Parvatmala programme under the National Ropeways Development Programme. It’s a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deal on a revenue-share basis with NHLML. Construction should take about six years, and then AEL will run it for 29 years. It’s not just about cables and cabins; it’s blending modern tech with deep spiritual vibes.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, couldn’t hold back his excitement. “The Kedarnath ropeway is more than an engineering project—it’s a bridge between devotion and modern infrastructure,” he said. He added that it honors the faith of millions, creates jobs for Uttarakhand locals, and boosts the region through ties with NHLML and the state government. This move shows Adani’s dedication to nation-building that lifts communities too.

Beyond easier access, the project will spark direct and indirect jobs and supercharge tourism in Uttarakhand. Adani Enterprises jumped into roads and highways in 2018 and has grown fast. Today, its RMRW division handles 14 projects under models like Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), and Toll-Operate-Transfer (TOT), spanning over 5,000 lane kilometres.

This Kedarnath ropeway isn’t just infrastructure—it’s a smart mix of tech and tradition. It ensures pilgrims reach their destination safely and comfortably while opening fresh economic doors for Uttarakhand. If you’re planning a spiritual trip, this could make Kedarnath visits way more inviting!
