Police in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, have arrested a man after a shocking social media video showed people burning a banner of Hindu deity Lord Rama, sparking fears over communal harmony in the area.
The disturbing footage surfaced online following an event on September 28 in Ayanputhur village, under Navalpattu police limits. Organizers from the Aindham Tamil Sangam held what’s called the Aasivaga Thirumal Guidance Festival, starting with a flag hoisting at 6 a.m. and wrapping up by 6 p.m. Around 100 people attended.
That evening, five to six group members allegedly attacked a flex banner featuring Lord Rama by hitting it with slippers, setting it ablaze, and chanting “Ravanae Potri, Ravanae Potri” – which translates to “Hail Ravana.” They then posted the video on their Facebook page, under the ID Aindham Tamilar Sangam, along with phone numbers inviting others to join.
A cybercrime monitoring officer spotted the video and filed a complaint, leading Trichy police to register a case on October 2 at the Cyber Crime Police Station. Charges include sections 192, 196(1)(a), 197, 299, 302, and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India’s new criminal code.
Officers quickly nabbed 36-year-old Adaikkalaraj, son of S. Shankar from Kavarpatti village in Pudukkottai district’s Viralimalai taluk. He appeared in court and now faces judicial custody as the investigation continues. Police are hunting for the other suspects involved.
Trichy District Superintendent of Police C. Selvanagarathinam issued a strong warning: Anyone sharing or posting social media content that offends religious sentiments or disrupts public peace will face tough action. This incident highlights growing concerns about hate speech and communal tensions in India.
