Indian High Jumper Sarvesh Kushare Shines with Personal Best at World Athletics Championships
In a thrilling night at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, India’s Sarvesh Kushare grabbed headlines with an incredible performance in the Men’s High Jump final. The 22-year-old athlete finished sixth overall, clearing a stunning personal best of 2.28 meters at the National Stadium. This marks a historic moment—Kushare became the first Indian ever to reach the Men’s High Jump final in the championships.
Kushare kicked off the final with a miss on his first attempt, but he bounced back like a champ. He nailed clearances up to 2.28m, showing real grit. He even tried for 2.31m to push for a top-five spot and get closer to the medals, but three attempts weren’t enough. Still, his effort has fans buzzing about India’s rising stars in athletics.
New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr stole the show, winning gold with a leap of 2.36m. He added this world title to his Olympic gold from earlier. China’s Woo grabbed silver, while Czechia’s Stefela took bronze. Kushare’s strong showing sets the perfect tone for India’s next big hope—javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra.
All eyes now turn to Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion and top favorite for gold in the men’s javelin throw. He’ll compete in the qualifying round on Wednesday, along with three other Indians, with the final set for Thursday. If Chopra nails it, India could celebrate another podium finish.
In other exciting action, Canada’s Ethan Katzberg defended his men’s hammer throw title from 2023, launching the hammer 81.72 meters for gold. Germany’s Merlin Hummel impressed with a personal best of 82.77 meters to snag silver, while Hungary’s Bence Halasz earned bronze at 82.69 meters. Katzberg’s win cements his spot as a global force in hammer throw events.
Over in the men’s 110m hurdles, American sensation Cordell Tinch claimed gold in 12.99 seconds—his first major international title at age 25. Jamaica’s Orlando Bennett ran a personal best of 13.08 for silver, and teammate Tyler Mason took bronze in 13.12. Tinch’s speed has everyone talking about the future of sprint hurdles.
India’s athletes are making waves at the World Athletics Championships, and with more events ahead, the excitement is just building. Stay tuned for updates on Neeraj Chopra and the rest of Team India!
