Prime Minister Narendra Modi dove into the vibrant Durga Puja festivities on Maha Ashtami, making a special visit to Delhi’s Chittaranjan Park, a hub for the city’s Bengali community. He joined locals at the iconic Kali Bari temple to honor Goddess Durga, soaking up the rhythmic beats of dhak drums and the sweet scent of incense.
Modi arrived in the evening and took part in the traditional sandhya aarti, drawing huge crowds of devotees and fans. Many called the moment historic, as thousands gathered at the pandal run by the CR Park Durga Puja Cooperative Society. The air buzzed with excitement, complete with cultural dances, tasty food stalls, and colorful decorations that lit up the night.
On social media, Modi shared his thoughts: “Today, on the auspicious occasion of Maha Ashtami, I went to Delhi’s Chittaranjan Park to take part in the Durga Puja celebrations. Chittaranjan Park is known for its strong association with Bengali culture. The celebrations truly reflect the spirit of unity and cultural vibrancy in our society. Prayed for everyone’s happiness and well-being.”
This visit carried deeper meaning too. With West Bengal assembly elections set for 2026, Modi’s presence at one of Delhi’s biggest Bengali festivals feels like a warm gesture to the community, many of whom hail from the state or trace roots to East Pakistan refugees. Locals beamed with pride, saying it highlighted India’s diverse cultural bonds.
Security ramped up across South Delhi, with traffic reroutes and strict protocols from the Special Protection Group. Yet the mood stayed joyful, as chants of “Jai Maa Durga” filled the pandal. Modi’s trip showed how festivals like Durga Puja bring people together, celebrating unity in a colorful, inclusive way.
