Karnataka: Minor killed over her elopement plans, mother arrested

In Udupi district, Karnataka, police arrested 45‑year‑old Gulzar Banu after she allegedly killed her 17‑year‑old daughter, Shifnaz, who had told her mother she planned to leave home and elope with her boyfriend.

Police say the argument erupted on September 20. Banu reportedly strangled Shifnaz with a cloth and then stabbed her with a knife. The post‑mortem found signs of a struggle and stab wounds, which led authorities to investigate more deeply.

Initially, Shifnaz’s father, Sheikh Mustafa, told police that the death was a suicide, but Banu later gave contradictory statements. She confessed to the crime during questioning, and the police took her into judicial custody.

Karkala City Police are now studying the evidence and confirming the facts. The case highlights the severity of domestic disputes that can turn deadly.

In a separate incident in Haveri district, authorities charged a woman and her boyfriend with torturing and killing a five‑year‑old girl. Investigators say the child was dragged into the Tungabhadra River on August 2 and left to drown. The case involves Annappa and Jyoti from Guddada Anveri and is under ongoing investigation.
