NYC transit slasher cut loose by judge, then knifes stranger in deranged subway attack:

A man who had already slipped off court‑ordered supervision was arrested again after he suddenly slashed a stranger on the street near the East Broadway subway station in Manhattan.

Police say the attack happened on Monday morning, about an hour after it had been reported that the same 32‑year‑old, Demitri Marshall, had pulled a knife on a passenger on a Bronx train.

When the incident in Manhattan broke out, the victim, a 27‑year‑old painter originally from Ecuador, was left with a gash across his lip and nose that required seven stitches. He called the police from the subway entrance after the attacker fled the scene, but officers didn’t catch him until a half‑mile away.

The victim told reporters that the whole exchange was “shock… I didn’t do anything. I could’ve been killed.” He added that it was “wrong what the city did” to let a known criminal walk free.

Marshall had already served a year in state prison for a robbery conviction that ended in June 2024. He was released on parole, but prosecutors wanted him to be held on bail when he was arrested for the Bronx train slashing. Judge Ralph L. Wolf granted supervised release instead, which the office of court administration said the court could not comment on at a case‑by‑case level.

“This decision reflects the court’s assessment of the defendant’s flight risk and other factors,” a state spokesperson said.

The city is now charging Marshall with first‑degree assault, a felony. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered to remain in custody at Rikers Island. His next court date is set for Oct. 30.

Marshall’s record includes seven prior arrests—two for punching people on public transit, a hate‑crime‑labeled assault on the F train, and several other charges dating back to 2012 on robbery, burglary and fare evasion. He was previously released from a jail stint in 2024.

The attacks have raised concerns among commuters and local officials about safety on New York City’s transit system. Law‑enforcement agencies are urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behavior.

With this latest arrest, New York’s justice system once again faces criticism over how it handles repeat offenders who pose a continuing threat to the public.
